Man Utd Lunchtime Round-Up, Tuesday 27th October 2026: Carrick to Stay on for Chelsea Trip Despite Pressure

It's been a tense morning at Carrington, with Michael Carrick arriving for talks over his future that reportedly failed to reach a firm conclusion straight away (Manchester Evening News). The latest word, though, is that he will remain in charge for the upcoming trip to Chelsea this weekend, with Sky Sports, the Manchester Evening News and the BBC all confirming Carrick will take the reins for that game (Sky Sports) (Manchester Evening News) (BBC Sport).

It's clearly a turbulent time behind the scenes, with David Squires even dedicating his latest Guardian cartoon to what's being described as United's "latest crisis" (The Guardian). The Guardian also reports that United would need to pay Newcastle around £3m in compensation were they to pursue Eddie Howe as a potential next manager, with the clause reportedly agreed when Howe left Newcastle in the summer (The Guardian).

Former United men haven't held back on the current squad. Steven Gerrard reportedly gave a brutal assessment, naming players he felt are "not good enough" (Manchester Evening News), while Wayne Rooney is said to have launched an X-rated rant and issued a stern threat towards the dressing room (Manchester Evening News). Amid the turmoil, Bruno Fernandes has reportedly been offered a potential escape route away from Old Trafford by a former manager, though there's said to be a catch involved, after he was left watching the defeat to Bournemouth from the bench (Manchester Evening News).

Elsewhere, Sky Sports' Laura Hunter has been looking at the Women's Super League picture after the sixth round of fixtures, posing the question of whether United have weathered their early-season storm (Sky Sports).
