Man Utd's Munich air disaster memorial targeted by thieves
Sad news away from the pitch this week, with a memorial to the 1958 Munich air disaster having been vandalised and items stolen from it.
ESPN reports that the memorial, which honours the 23 people - including eight Manchester United players and three staff - who lost their lives when the team's plane crashed on a Munich runway in 1958, has been vandalised (ESPN). It is a stark reminder of one of the darkest chapters in the club's history, one that still resonates deeply with United supporters today.
The BBC adds further detail, reporting that four medals and a crystal trophy were taken from the display, citing German media as the source of that information (BBC Sport). That suggests the memorial sits in Germany, close to where the tragedy occurred, and that the stolen items held real historical and sentimental value connected to those United players and staff who died.
The Manchester Evening News confirms the location as Manchesterplatz, and reports that police are now investigating after a glass box housing Manchester United memorabilia marking the disaster was targeted by thieves (Manchester Evening News). This matches up with the other reports in terms of the basic facts - a memorial display broken into and items taken - though the MEN is the only outlet to specifically name the Manchesterplatz site.
Between the three reports, the picture is consistent: a memorial dedicated to the victims of the Munich air disaster has been broken into, with medals and a trophy stolen, and police are now looking into the incident. For United fans, the disaster remains one of the most painful moments in the club's history, and news of this kind will understandably cause real upset among supporters and those connected to the victims' families.
As yet there's no word from any of the outlets on a police investigation reaching a conclusion or on whether the stolen items have been recovered, so this is very much a developing story that United supporters will want to keep an eye on in the days ahead.
