Barrios opened the scoring inside the first minute, and United never really recovered, with Yoro's red card on 74 minutes for a foul on Jonathan David turning a tough night into a hopeless one. Lookman punished the extra man five minutes later, finishing from close range after a fast break, and United's late flurry - including Cunha's saved effort and Maguire having a shot blocked in stoppage time - came far too late to matter. A thoroughly disappointing evening in Madrid for ten-man United.

A grim finish for ten-man United, who are simply trying to see out the closing stages against an Atlético side content to manage the game with their two-goal, extra-man advantage. Lammens hasn't been tested again since his save from Jonathan David, and most of the action has been free-kicks and late fouls - including a booking for Le Normand - as United try to find any foothold they can in stoppage time.

It's going from bad to worse for ten-man United - Lammens saved well from Jonathan David but Lookman pounced from close range to turn the break into a goal moments later. Atlético 2-0 up now against a United side that looks completely out of ideas with the extra man against them.

Disaster for United - Yoro's foul on Jonathan David is upgraded by VAR and he's sent off, leaving ten men to hold on for the final quarter-hour while already trailing 1-0. A huge blow after Bruno had rattled the bar, and Atlético will fancy their chances of adding to their lead with the extra man.

Atlético remain in the ascendancy, still holding close to two-thirds of possession and pushing the shot count further clear, with Baena twice going close - first curling narrowly wide and then forcing a save - either side of Jonathan David's introduction. United did have a bright moment when Bruno Fernandes should have done better from a Tielemans through-ball, but fouls keep mounting against them and they're yet to really build on that chance.

Atlético have continued to dominate the ball and nearly extended their lead when Julián Álvarez crashed a shot against the woodwork. United's discipline has deteriorated further too, with Rashford picking up a needless yellow card after a couple of fouls, and the hosts' fouls tally has crept up while Mbeumo and company have struggled to get a foothold. It's been a nervy ten minutes for United, who need to find some composure and get a foothold in the game again.

Quiet start to the second half with nothing to separate the sides stat-wise since the restart - possession, shots and discipline are all unchanged from the break. United have avoided conceding more ground, but they'll need to find another gear quickly if they're to claw back Barrios' early strike.

Atlético have reasserted themselves and taken control of this spell, with possession climbing back above 66% and discipline becoming an issue for United, who've given away four fouls in this period through Andrey Santos and Heaven. Álvarez tried his luck from outside the box but couldn't trouble Lammens, and with half-time approaching United need to settle things down and find that platform they had before this lull.

United have grown into this and arguably shaded the last ten minutes. Mbeumo forced another save out of Oblak before Baleba headed a Bruno cross straight at the keeper, and Andrey Santos has also won a free kick in a promising area. Atlético still carry a threat on the counter though, with Grimaldo rattling the bar from a free kick, so it's finely poised despite the scoreline.

United have started to show signs of life after that early setback. Rashford went close with a right-footed effort from the box, set up by a lovely through ball from Lisandro Martínez, and they've won a corner and a free kick in this spell too. Atlético still edge the possession and shot count, but the gap has narrowed as United finally get a foothold in the game.

Atlético continue to look the sharper side as United try to find their feet. Grimaldo forced Lammens into a smart stop from the left side of the box, with Baena also drawn into the action before his effort was blocked. United are yet to register a shot of their own and are still chasing the game early on.
